Overview
Laser energy has many applications for oral health management including local and systemic influences. These range from post-operative wound healing decreasing reliance on opioid medications to anti-inflammatory effects both centered around photo bio-modulation (PBM) . Photo dynamic therapy (PDT) can have dramatic effects on managing microbial disease of the oral cavity without initiating antibiotic resistance.
Recently, there has been the development of oral medicaments that are innovative and effective to assist in wound healing, infections, management of mucositis, xerostomia, aphthous/herpetic lesions and periodontitis. Their effects mimic some of the attributes and methods of actions as laser energy. An example is oral mucositis management utilizing both photo bio-modulation, oral probiotics and anti-oxidant oral gels.
As our patients continue to seek out "natural remedies” to "treat” their oral and systemic conditions, we now have laser assisted "nutraceuticals” to can create a faster and more effective way to manage disease and associated complications.
Learning Objectives
- Review laser wavelengths and their implications to oral and systemic health management.
- Describe how adjunctive antimicrobial and anti inflammatory medicaments can provide a synergistic effect with respective laser applications.
- Create strategies for patient scripting to enhance a positive case acceptance for laser local/systemic health.
