ILED - DUBAI 2018
Dr. Khalid M. Hannouneh, DDS, ALD Fellow, Diplo. (BAIRD)
As a new member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, I was very happy to hear that the ALD was celebrating its 25th anniversary with an international conference in the Middle East this year, more specifically in the city in which I reside, Dubai. It offered me an amazing chance to meet all of the wonderful people behind this respected Academy.
As a student of Dr. Walid Altayeb and Dr. Manaf Taher Agha, the key organizers of this meeting, I wasn’t surprised by the outstanding success of such an important event. The conference theme was imagination, innovation, illumination. The name “iLED” directed the focus on implants, Lasers, and Esthetics in Dentistry. The conference was a collaboration between the ALD and the British Academy for Implant and Restorative Dentistry (BAIRD). iLED2018 represented the leadership of the Academy of Laser Dentistry in the field of laser dentistry on an international level and on light and enlightenment on all dental laser wavelengths.
The number and quality of both the lectures and presenters that were attending and lecturing at this conference were humongous, with renowned names in all fields of dentistry from lasers to implants and restorative dentistry. All the lecturers were distinguished and influential names recognized in the field of dentistry worldwide.
As a member of the ALD, holding the standard proficiency certification and recently having finished the professional diploma of advanced laser dentistry, I continued my education with my exam on October 3rd (pre-conference) for the advanced proficiency level certification: Parts 1(written exam) & 2 (Clinical Simulation). The most amazing part was with the organization and the accuracy of the examiners and the coordination of such an event. On the end of the second day of the conference, I had the honor to be recognized and awarded the certificate of International Fellowship of the Academy of Laser Dentistry [See Gail’s article in this issue on International Fellowship of the ALD].
The attendance at the meeting was very good. Participants came from all over the world. I met doctors from Yemen, Bulgaria, Saudi Arabia, Canada, UK, USA, Germany, Japan, China, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and from all over the world. They all came here to attend this event which took place for the first time, outside the US. I had the honor to attend the panel discussion on lasers in perio, which was an informative debate that extended for more than 2 hours. This was one of the conference highlights.
The feedback from some of my colleagues who attended and weren’t members of the ALD was that it was amazing and it initiated their interest to know and learn more about laser dentistry. I am proud to be a member of such a wonderful organization. I hope to meet many more new friends in Dallas April 4-6, 2019! See you there.

Are your laser safety glasses safe? Routine maintenance of all laser safety glasses is one of the jobs of the Laser Safety Officer (LSO). The LSO should regularly check that the correct glasses are with the appropriate laser wavelength. Optical density may be confirmed on the safety glasses; side shields must be present, and glasses must be free of any scratches or compromises to the lens. These assessments should be recorded in the Laser Safety Manual. Appendix H: Laser Protective Eyewear Maintenance Log, Table 6: Laser Protective Eyewear Maintenance Log on page 27 of the ALD DIY Safety Guide.

As the daylight hours dwindle this Autumn, it is nice to know that the light is shining bright with ALD! What a busy month we have had. Dubai was the host city for the first joint iLED2018 Meeting with ALD and BAIRD (British Academy of Implant and Restorative Dentistry). It was a huge success with most of the ALD Board of Directors and a wide international audience in attendance. Make sure to read Dr. Khalid Hannouneh’s account of the meeting. Gail Siminovsky, ALD Executive Director, introduces ALD’s International Fellowship program and the newest recipients from the Dubai meeting. Our Laser Safety Tip for October is about checking the laser safety glasses in your office. Thanks for taking the time to stay connected with your friends at ALD through your Lightwaves publication. If you have any questions, comments or suggestions, please contact us and we will address your concerns.
