Course Description

This course will address the specific duties of a Laser Safety Officer (LSO) necessary to meet the safety requirements in the ANSI Z136.1 and Z136.3 American National Standard for the Safe Use of Lasers in Health Care as it relates to dentistry.  This course is designed specifically for dental care settings and will help guide participants in developing and implementing a laser safety program. It emphasizes hazard identification and safe work practices that apply to all laser operators, and includes the changes in the latest revision of the standards. The science of lasers, their classifications and terminology, and the components of a health care laser system (HCLS) will be included. Safety concerns and considerations will focus on potential issues for both laser beam dangers and non-beam hazards including electrical, respiratory, and fire hazards, as well as, human factors, engineering controls, and safety mechanisms.  The LSO’s role and responsibilities will be discussed as well as the procedural and administrative controls that need to be in place at every laser facility.  This type of educational program must be completed by the practice’s LSO to enable the mandated registration of their Class 4 laser devices with various state regulatory agencies that may require specific laser safety officer training.  This program meets most state requirements for the practice's Laser Safety Officer which may be required for laser & LSO registration.  Note: Part 1 - Foundations in Laser Dentistry or Standard Level Certification is a required pre-requisite for this course.

After successful completion of this program attendees will have:

• An understanding of laser science and terminology and tissue interations
• An understanding of the laser classifications, dental laser types, marketplace availability
• Knowledge of the potential beam and non-beam hazards of a laser, precautionary measures
• An understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Laser Safety Officer (LSO)
• The ability to develop a laser safety program for their facility

• Part 3 - Standard Level Online Exam, 75 Question Exam (to be completed within 90 days of course) - 1 CEU
• Please note: Registration for Standard Level Courses ends on March 1, 2020. Please register prior to that date if you are interested.
• Registration Fee: $495 with Conference Registration; $850 if not attending Conference

Course Description
This course contains distance learning, lecture and hands-on learning opportunities. It includes a comprehensive overview and basic understanding of all dental laser devices, laser tissue interactions, emission modes and safety and operation of a variety of dental lasers. A 6-hour online distance learning course is included and required prior to April 1, 2020.  A hands-on clinical simulation examination and online 75-question multiple choice exam is included in the course fees. Candidates will bring lasers when possible.  Upon successful completion (completion of online course and passing both the clinical simulation and online exam) participants will be recognized as having completed the certification program for ALD approved Standard Dental Laser Certification. The course material is in accordance with the new ALD 2020 Curriculum Guidelines and Standards for Dental Laser Education. A variety of dental lasers will be utilized with support from dental manufacturers.

ALD Dental Laser Standard Level Course Includes:

• Part 1: Foundations in Laser Dentistry Online Course (to be completed prior to conference) - 6 CEUs
• Part 2: Lecture and Hands-on participation, Clinical Simulation Exam on the device or a similar device that you utilize in your office (at conference) - 6 CEUs
• Part 3: Online 75 question multiple choice psychometric exam (to be completed within 90 days) - 1 CEU

Overview Description of the Advanced Proficiency Program
Advanced Proficiency certification represents a higher level of recognition for knowledge and application of lasers used in the clinical environment. Candidates for advanced level recognition must demonstrate advanced level of clinical proficiency in safety and clinical use.

There are three components at this level:

• Online Examination. A 75 multiple choice online exam covers all areas of lasers in dentistry. Applicants must have achieved Standard Level Certification prior to beginning the Advanced Proficiency program. The online proctored exam must be completed in person at the annual meeting.
• Clinical Simulation Examination. This exam is available at the Annual Conference. The exam will test the candidate's knowledge of a chosen laser(s), within an environment that replicates a given clinical setting.  Candidates will be assigned a clinical simulation exam time and must complete this oral exam within a 30-minute time frame.
• Clinical Case Presentations and Examination. Candidates must pass the online written exam and the Clinical Simulation Exam prior to presenting their clinical cases. Candidates must attend at least 2 annual conferences before the award can be earned.   Candidates will prepare 5 clinical case studies and be prepared to present a minimum of two. Laser Safety Officers are not required to participate in this portion.
• Requirements for Attaining Advanced Proficiency are detailed on the Education & Certification Program pages online. 

Upon registering for the Advanced Proficiency progam, candidate will download extensive preparation instructions including a suggested time table and be assigned a mentor who has Advanced Proficiency and who will be available to the candidate for the duration of their Advanced Proficiency process.

The Certification Committee provides a mentor program and study guides to help candidates prepare for success.

* Candidates for Case Study Presentations should begin preparing cases prior to this date to allow ample time for 6 month case follow up photographs.

Cancellation Policy

For written or faxed cancellations received on or before February 1, 2020 a full refund will be issued less a $150 administrative fee. No refunds will be issued after February 1, 2020.
